Real Talkies

Every cut is a lie. It’s never that way. Those two shots were never next to each other in time that way. But you’re telling a lie in order to tell the truth. –Wolf Koenig.

Oscar Nominated Short Documentaries are…

January 25, 2011 , , , , ,

The short film nominations are literally from all over the world in terms of the stories represented. I have not seen any of the films and hence am writing based on reviews, the film websites and trailers if available.

Killing in the name, Poster Girl are kinda related two individuals whose lives have changed forever secondary to acts of terrorism and violent wars. Ashraf has taken upon himself to question and discuss the subject of terrorism and recruitment and killing in the name of Allah. On the other hand Robynn, a poster girl for the army, former cheer leader in her high school is struggling with the memory of war and PSTD after her deployment in Iraq.  Sun Come Up and The warriors of Quigang could be broadly classified as environmental documentaries one about displacement and relocation and the other about struggle against want will destroy their village and lives. Strangers no more sounds like a bitter sweet story about children who have survived the worst in their home countries and are struggling to cope with school in Tel Aviv.

Looking forward to seeing the films soon.

Ashraf was celebrating the happiest day of his life when an A-Qaeda suicide bomber walked into his wedding and killed his father and 26 other family members in fornt of his eyes. Now, he’s rising from tragedy to break the silence in the Muslim community on the taboo subject of terrorism.

Poster girl is the story of Robynn MUrray, an all American high school cheerleader turned “poster girl” for women in combat, distinguished by Army magazine’s cover shot. Now back home from Iraq, her tough as nail exterior begins to crack, leaving her struggling with PTSD.

Children from 48 different countries and diverse backgrounds come together to learn in a school in Tel Aviv. Many of the children are fleeing poverty, political adversities and genocide.

Sun come up follows the relocation of the world’s first environmental refugees, the Carteret islanders – a community living on a remote island chain in the south pacific ocean.

Villagers in central china take on a chemical company that is poisoning their land and water. For five years they fight to transform their environment and as they do, they find themselves transformed as well.  Yang directed two other documentaries – The blood of Yingzhou district ( 2006 Academy Award winner) and Tongzhi in love.
