Every cut is a lie. It’s never that way. Those two shots were never next to each other in time that way. But you’re telling a lie in order to tell the truth. –Wolf Koenig.

MONOPOLY IS NOT A GAME IT IS LIFE

October 22, 2010 , , ,

Folks, just take a moment from your busy day and think of the moment when you played monopoly for the first time. Long drawn out games, someone always goes bankrupt and is unhappy, eventually there is a fight of some sorts. Personally, it was a part of my childhood. It is one of the few things that we did as a family of five and all of us had loads of fun playing it. Every family tweaks the game, bends the rules and have their own mortgage schemes and versions of monopoly.

I was at Austin Film Festival, 2010 waiting in line to watch “MAIN STREET” and someone gave me a $500 monopoly money. For a moment, I was like what’s wrong with this dude. It was a coupon for, “Under the boardwalk – The Monopoly Story” and offered a $3 discount on the DVD order. “UNDER THE BOARDWALK” is a documentary about the world of Monopoly and the people who not only enjoy playing it but compete.

The film is screening at Austin Film Festival and in probably many more venues. The trailer did not exactly spike my interest or nostalgia for the game. May be, if the trailer was a bit more interesting and scintillating, I might have tried to make it to the film at the festival. But for now I will just wait for it to come on Netflix and watch it.  The film won the audience award for best documentary in Anaheim Film Festival, hence I presume, it was definitely hitting the spot for a lot of people but the trailer did not cut it for me.

If you are in Austin, the film plays on Saturday October 23rd, 7:15 p.m. at Regal Arbor 8 and Tuesday October 26th 6 p.m. at Texas Spirit Theater.
