Real Talkies

Every cut is a lie. It’s never that way. Those two shots were never next to each other in time that way. But you’re telling a lie in order to tell the truth. –Wolf Koenig.

How much is your body worth? A BBC Horizon documentary that explores how dead bodies have become big business.

I was really hesitant to post this on my blog because of the rather direct and bold title. There are segments of the film that are blunt and gross. The British have their ways!  But, it is an issue that should be talked about and not tucked away.

My gratitude is immense for the families that choose to donate the remains of their loved ones to Medical school and for organ transplant and other tissue based medical interventions. Several years ago, when I told a friend that I was a registered organ donor, he thought it was a bad idea. He believed that if I had an emergency, the medical community will not do everything to save my life. There are a lot of paranoia and myths about body donations and body snatching rings definitely do not help alleviate our fears. This is a 48 minute film, that explores this issue from multiple angles and I recommend it strongly.

Dead bodies have always been an integral part of medical education. But this film reveals an ugly black market that has emerged due to an  unprecedented demand for the human tissue primarily to train surgeons and for use in surgery. A deceased body can be worth a staggering $250,000. Less than 1% of Americans are willing donors. Therefore, the  increasing demand for body parts has resulted in grave robbery with some devastating consequence.
