Real Talkies

Every cut is a lie. It’s never that way. Those two shots were never next to each other in time that way. But you’re telling a lie in order to tell the truth. –Wolf Koenig.

WE LIVE IN PUBLIC – a fabulous film by Ondi Timoner, 2009. It took ten years to make the film from 5000 hours of footage.

This is the story of the greatest internet pioneer you’ve never heard of – JOHN HARRIS and his vision of what the internet can and will do.

The film is a tale of the evolution of the internet, dot.com boom and the bizarre individual who was on the edge of sanity and clearly far ahead of his times. Harris if often called the “Warhol of the web”, he founded Pseudo.com, the first internet television network in the 90s. He also curated and founded the ground breaking and surreal project “Quiet” in an underground bunker in NYC where over 100 people lived together under 24 hour surveillance for 30 days – absolutely no privacy. Finally he lives in public and with his girlfriend under sophisticated electronic surveillance which led to his mental collapse. There are plenty of reviews about this film online if people are tickled to know more. I think one should just watch it, no words can sum up the experience.

Watching the film now, in the age of social networking is unnerving. As Eric Schonfeld puts it, “Public is the new default”.  In the film Josh says, “As the world has modernized, the social nature of things are going to be done virtually. And we get this group generated consciousness and our dreams will be decided by each other“. Wonder what he is doing now!
